Test your Site
If you want to know how well your website
stacks up
and if you need to optimize, follow these easy steps:
-
How many site visitors do you get?
You should be able to check your
site statistics and easily to determine just how many visitors you
get each month. Is this number growing? Declining? High traffic is
nice, but conversions are more important (see #2).
-
How many conversions do you get?
Do you track how many email sales or leads you are getting? You can also set
up a special 1-800 number
that only appears on your website (but
rings thru to any regular number you are using). This will
tell you
how many phone calls your site is generating.
These above figures will give you a baseline from which you can
determine the costs/effectiveness
(ROI)
of your site and measure any future changes. Well-ranked small
business websites can easily generate dozens of email leads and
phone calls per day - are you getting your share?
-
How well do you rank for your
keywords?
If a potential client does not know your name, they will use what
they think best describes your goods and services; for example, a
potential client wants a resort in the Florida Keys, usually they
simply type "florida keys resorts" in the Google or other search
engine searchbox. If the search
results come up and you are not on them, the ones that appear have a
very good shot at getting any business and you get none. It has
nothing to do with the size of the companies that are listed, higher
ranked companies are usually optimized to appear there and grab the
major portion of
available leads. It is not uncommon for smaller business to outrank
major chains or bigger businesses.
-
Do you have any inbound links from
other "relevant" sites?
Relevant inbound links count as "votes" for the importance and value
of your site. As a general rule,
if you have few inbound links, search engines figure you aren't
important enough to rank. A link from
a Viagara site to your resort is becoming more and more useless as
search engines tweak their algorithms for relevance to avoid link
spamming - it used to work, but less and less now.
Website optimization combined with
promotion & great web usability (design factors)
will get you more traffic and sales.
